Electric Power Steering (EPS) is a useful invention, and practically every car is now equipped with this system. EPS significantly facilitates vehicle handling by reducing the effort the driver needs to put into turning the steering wheel. The invention and implementation of EPS have not only made driving easier but also safer. Modern models with electric power steering are compact and not overly complicated.

    EPS Failures

While EPS is a reliable system, it can experience failures that can immediately impact safety. Therefore, in case of a malfunction, it should be repaired promptly. The EPS system may deactivate without the driver noticing, which can happen when this error is not displayed on the control panel.

Performing a simple test can determine the state of the electric power steering:

    • Turn off the engine and turn the steering wheel.
    • Start the engine and turn the steering wheel again.

Simply compare these two actions. If the steering wheel is difficult to turn in both cases, EPS diagnosis will be necessary.

Sometimes, EPS stops working along with the speedometer. In this case, there may be an issue with the speed sensor, which interacts with the speedometer and power steering. The sensor itself may be faulty, requiring replacement, or there may be faulty wiring.

Repairing electric power steering will be necessary in case of voltage drop. EPS will shut down due to lack of voltage, and a fuse is provided to protect against excessive voltage. Shutdown may be caused by the battery, alternator, or wiring, all of which should be checked at regular intervals.

    Why Does EPS Behave Unpredictably?

It happens that electric power steering starts behaving strangely. For example, when driving straight on a flat stretch of road without making any movements, the power steering suddenly turns to one side. This erratic behavior is accompanied by a noticeable shock. This situation is very dangerous and can be the cause of an accident.

As soon as the driver senses that there is a problem with electric power steering, it should be diagnosed as soon as possible. Professional workshops use special test stands for diagnostics, making repairs much easier and faster.

The MS561 controller is used to check the functionality of electric steering columns and electro-hydraulic power steering pumps. The device can independently activate the steering system regardless of the vehicle's electrical system and detect and repair steering control faults. Units can be diagnosed both in the vehicle and after disassembly.

    Controller advantages:Quick unit checks.

    • Equipped with a built-in power supply with a current of up to 100A.
    • Tablet with built-in diagnostic software (compatible with several VAG Group units).
    • Equipped with an OBDII connector for connecting any diagnostic scanner.

What to Do if EPS Stops Working?

When suddenly, with the engine running, the steering wheel becomes heavy, and turning is not as easy as it used to be, it means that EPS is malfunctioning. Turning off and restarting the engine may make the problem disappear, but it should be remembered that this is only a temporary solution.

It is advisable to diagnose the problem as quickly as possible and repair the EPS.
