This Hyundai Kona came to us from the Czech Republic – so much so that the fame of STS.Electro, the electrical division of STS.Parts, has spread. And notwithstanding the fact that during driving the electric motorbike gave a strong rockit. The customer diagnosed the malfunction of the self-torque – in his opinion, the cause of extraneous sounds was the gearbox. However, unlike the owner of the car, we were not so sure.
Once again, we drove the car around our service station. Indeed, there was present a non-abysmal gurkit, which was amplified as we accelerated. It was so strong that the vibrations were even transmitted to the cabin panels. However, we were not quick to make any conclusions about the source.
The right is that we have faced similar problems before. We have repaired a lot of Korean electric cars with complaints of rocking, rumbling during driving. It is mainly the same Kona as the one we have now, as well as its «dear brother» Kia Niro EV, technologically identical car. Far not always, but more precisely, quite rarely the gearbox was the culprit. The most problematic parts of the electric motor – in particular, the bearings.
Therefore, we started with the electric motor, and not for free. At once it should be noted that on these cars the electric motor can be removed separately, without removing the gearbox. We were not surprised by the picture we saw in the centre; it had happened before. On the bearing of the primary shaft, in its seating place – there was always present fudge, but there was no moisture there. Motor guts were absolutely dry.
The reason for this at first glance very marvellous phenomenon was the fact that in this case the liquor in this case – it is a drubna chip. It was caused by the overturned stroke of the bearing, which is made floating to compensate for the different coefficients of expansion of the aluminium housing of the electric motor and the aluminium rotor. Without this, the bearing would inevitably become hot and jammed during operation. However, it would have broken its seat, accumulated chips and started to vibrate.
Because in such cases the fibrous metal saw blade is bound to get into the middle of the bearing and stick mastic, this part needs to be replaced. So we did. We also greased its seating area to prevent the formation of chips for the future. Picked up the electric motor and installed it on the car, again made a test drive. We did not hear any unusual sounds or vibrations anymore.
Summary. Even if the cause of the failure seems obvious, it is not obligatory. In this case, it was not the gearbox, but the electric motor. Knocks, gurkotinnya, tremtinnya can be given in the neighbouring nodes of such units, especially so tightly interconnected as the motor and transmission. Obviously, it is good, when the owner tries to be aware of his car and respectfully follows its condition. However, only true masters – such as, for example, STS.Parts.
