A steering gearbox is one type of vehicle control mechanism. Today, these units are mainly installed on trucks and heavy off-road vehicles, although they were previously used in passenger cars as well. The operating principle of the gearbox differs from steering racks. In it, the steering effort applied by the driver is transmitted using two perpendicular shafts - the primary shaft and the distributor shaft. A worm wheel is mounted on one, and a worm or "endless screw" on the other. Although the repair of worm gears is a service in demand, not all auto repair shops can provide it.
Signs that worm gear repair is necessary
Steering gearboxes are very reliable units. But despite this, it's necessary to regularly check their functionality and ensure they are in good working order. Symptoms of problems may include:
- heavy steering;
- play, noise, and vibrations when turning;
- lubricant leakage from the steering gearbox;
- steering wheel binding and uneven movement;
- the car veering to one side.
If one or more of these signs appear, it's urgent to diagnose the worm gear and repair it if necessary.
