Purpose and construction
A steering rack is a power unit of the steering system, which allows for the ease of turning the vehicle's steering wheel. Damage to this unit poses a safety risk while driving.
There are three types of steering racks:
- without power steering
- with hydraulic power steering
- with electric power steering (EPS)
In terms of quality, durability, and serviceability, the steering rack with hydraulic power steering is the best. The hydraulic power steering is, in turn, a closed-loop hydraulic system consisting of a pump, pressure regulator, hydraulic fluid reservoir, and the power cylinder of the hydraulic system.
An undeniable advantage of the steering rack with hydraulic steering is the reduction of effort required by the driver to turn the steering wheel, as well as the damping of shocks that are transmitted to the steering wheel when the vehicle is moving on uneven surfaces.
Steering rack damage
A damaged steering rack causes various issues, all of which indicate one thing: a negative impact on vehicle handling, both in terms of comfort and safety for the driver and passengers.
The main signs of damage to a hydraulic power steering rack are:
- vibration or stiff steering
- hydraulic fluid leakage
- the car pulling during turns
- the steering wheel not returning to the original position
In Lublin, the most common cause of steering rack damage is excessive turning of the steering wheel to the extreme left or right after the engine warms up during the winter season. In remote areas, the main cause of steering mechanism wear is poor road conditions. Damage to this unit can also be caused by a torn protective cover (dirt enters the rack), or a lack of or contamination of the hydraulic fluid in the system.
