Software Disabling of Start/Stop Function
According to research, a modern car used in urban conditions spends at least a quarter of its consumed fuel on idling: standing at traffic lights, in traffic jams, during other short-term stops. To prevent excessive fuel consumption, emissions into the atmosphere, and to improve driving comfort, manufacturers have invented a way to quickly turn the engine on and off without driver intervention. Despite saving about 10% of fuel, sometimes deactivation of the start/stop system becomes necessary.
Why the "Start/Stop" System Can Become a Problem
To allow a car to turn off and start multiple times, its engine is improved - strengthening certain components. Changes include:
- More powerful starter;
- Battery with increased capacity;
- Silent start system.
Additionally, electronic sensors participate in the system's operation. Based on their data, the ECU decides on enabling/disabling the "start-stop" function.
Despite enhanced characteristics, components cannot withstand frequent starts and usually fail earlier than in similar cars not equipped with this system. Repair of such modified nodes is typically more expensive than those not designed for start-stop.
Most importantly - the system severely impacts vehicles equipped with turbochargers. Their operation rules prohibit frequently stopping such engines, otherwise engine oil quickly loses its properties.
Advantages of Disabling the Start/Stop System
Software disabling of automatic engine shutdown and startup has its benefits:
- Positively affects the performance of components and aggregates;
- Eliminates the need to manually disable functions;
- Removes the need for further system servicing;
- Reduces engine load.
Deactivation of start-stop carries no risks for the car and does not affect the operation of other systems.
Is Disabling "Start/Stop" Legal
The ability to disable the system is provided by the design of most cars equipped with it and can be implemented using a special button. The problem is that the mode must be activated after each engine start, which reduces driving comfort. Disabling essentially keeps the button permanently in the on position.
