Volkswagen ID.4 from China: Charging Port Upgrade and Adaptation for the European Market
VW ID.4
The Volkswagen ID.4 is one of the most popular electric crossovers in the world. Spacious, modern, and high-tech, it has become the logical choice for many drivers in Europe.
But there’s a catch: a significant portion of these cars, even in Germany, are imported from China. The reason is simple:
price. The Chinese versions are often cheaper, available sooner, and come with decent features.
However, along with the benefits come specific differences:
- different charging standards
- differences in software
- limited compatibility with European infrastructure
The biggest sticking point is the charging port itself.
Chinese versions may have a different connection standard and, critically, single-phase charging, which is significantly slower than European three-phase charging.

In real life, this means:
- constant adapters
- unstable connection
- limited choice of charging stations
- slow charging
- problems in humid climates
It was with this set of challenges that the client turned to STS.Electro.
Case Study: VW ID.4 Charging Port Replacement in One Day
The owner of a Chinese-made Volkswagen ID.4, who resides permanently in Germany, contacted the STS.Electro workshop in Warsaw.
Despite the well-developed service market there, the client deliberately chose STS—based on recommendations and the team’s strong reputation.
At the same time, the car owner had clear requirements:
- complete all work in one day
- accept the car on Saturday so he could avoid additional accommodation costs
Despite the typically shorter workday, the STS.Electro team accommodated his request.
What didn’t suit the client
The main problem was the Chinese charging port and the single-phase system.

In everyday use, this caused constant inconvenience:
- the need to carry a set of adapters
- difficulty traveling in Europe
- unstable performance in high humidity (especially relevant for northern Germany)
- slow charging
The car essentially failed to meet the level of comfort typically expected from a modern EV.
What needed to be done
The task turned out to be much broader than simply "replacing the connector."

STS.Electro carried out a comprehensive set of tasks:
- installation of a European charging port
- replacing the charging port cover
- laying and connecting new cables to the battery
- installation of plugs and adapters
- conversion from a single-phase to a three-phase charging system
- Software adaptation of the vehicle
A particular challenge was accessing dealer
software for the Chinese market. Proper integration required synchronization with dealer services, including remote access and specific settings.
Additional work
The client decided to make the most of the visit and ordered a number of additional modifications:
- activation of brake lights during regenerative braking
- resetting service intervals
- additional software settings
In total—about seven separate operations.

The team deliberately stayed late on Saturday to complete all tasks within a single day.
Result
All work was completed on time.
The customer received a car that:
- is fully compatible with European charging stations
- charges faster thanks to a three-phase system
- does not require adapters
- operates reliably even in harsh weather conditions
As the customer headed home, the STS.Electro team stayed in touch with him along the way to remotely check the systems’ operation. We provide this kind of support and 24/7 consultation consistently to all our customers. This is especially important for complex electrical installations.
