BYD Song Plus in Europe: How to Replace a Chinese eSIM with a European SIM Card

Auto:

BYD Song Plus

Problem:
The BYD Song Plus's built-in eSIM was locked to a Chinese carrier and did not provide mobile service in Europe
Result:
We replaced the eSIM with an adapter that holds a physical SIM card and configured the software. The car now has a stable European Internet connection and access to online features and updates.
BYD Song Plus in Europe: How to Replace a Chinese eSIM with a European SIM Card

The Modern BYD Song Plus and the Challenges of Driving in Europe

Modern Chinese electric vehicles and hybrids have long since gone beyond being mere means of transportation. Today, they are true “smartphones on wheels,” where driver and passenger comfort depends directly on the multimedia ecosystem. A striking example of this approach is the updated BYD Song Plus crossover from 2025. An impressive digital interior, smart assistants, online navigation, and continuous over-the-air (OTA) system updates make this car exceptionally high-tech.

However, when importing the vehicle from China to European countries, owners almost immediately face a major obstacle: a lack of connectivity.

The issue is that the BYD Song Plus relies on a telematics module from the BYD DiLink 5.1 platform (manufactured by Hangzhou Yihang Electronics Co., Ltd., part number SFHWI-7924200 / MTEB06) for internet connectivity. An eSIM chip designed exclusively for local Chinese carriers (China Unicom or China Mobile) is soldered into this module at the factory.

Once in Europe, this eSIM becomes a problem. Chinese providers do not offer international roaming for these chips, so the car simply “does not recognize” European cell towers. This cannot be fixed via software: it is impossible to reprogram or reconfigure the eSIM through the menu or a scanner, since the profile is hardcoded at the hardware level. As a result, the owner ends up with a great car but a “silent” multimedia system—no real-time maps, no traffic updates, no apps, and no ability to update the firmware.

It was with this specific request—to restore full internet connectivity to the car—that the owner of a 2025 BYD Song Plus turned to the STS service center in Warsaw.

How We Restored Internet Connectivity: Switching from eSIM to a Physical SIM

To solve this problem once and for all, professional “surgical” intervention in the multimedia unit’s microelectronics was required. Our specialists implemented a comprehensive solution consisting of several critical steps:

  1. Careful disassembly of the unit. First, the technicians carefully removed the SFHWI-7924200 central module from the dashboard, taking great care to preserve all interior trim and mounting hardware. The unit was disassembled in a specially equipped antistatic area.

  1. Modification of the printed circuit board (PCB). At the PCB level, an electronics engineer desoldered the stock Chinese eSIM chip. In its place, a specialized adapter with a flexible cable and a slot for a standard physical SIM card was integrated. The cable was routed to a discreet yet easily accessible location so that the owner could replace the card at any time without tools.

  1. Assembly and Reinstallation. The DiLink 5.1 module was assembled into its original housing with the factory thermal interfaces restored to ensure proper cooling, and it was reinstalled in the dashboard.
  2. Software configuration and final testing. After the hardware work was completed, we inserted a SIM card from the European carrier selected by the client, configured the network profiles (APN), and conducted testing.

The result was immediate: the car instantly connected to the network, launched online services, downloaded the latest maps, and successfully checked for new OTA updates.

Why should you turn to STS.Electro for this task?

Upgrading the multimedia systems in modern electric vehicles is a task that leaves no room for error. DiLink 5.1 boards have a high component density, and any unqualified intervention can lead to the failure of the entire telematics module.

By choosing STS in Warsaw, you get:

  • Experience and safety: Our engineers have in-depth knowledge of BYD’s electronics architecture (particularly for the Tang, Han, and Song Plus / Seal U models from 2024–2025) and use professional soldering equipment.
  • Convenience: The removable slot makes it easy to swap SIM cards when traveling between different countries or switch carriers for more affordable plans.
  • Full “turnkey” service: We don’t just solder in the slot—we fully adapt the software, configure data transmission, and deliver a car that’s completely ready for use.
  • Quality Guarantee: We provide an official warranty from our service for all work performed and components installed.
